Places to pair with the evening
Innsbruck around the evening
A few places in Innsbruck's Old Town to see before or after the Tyrolean evening: the Golden Roof, the Court Church and the town on the Inn.
Pick a night in Innsbruck ↗A town named for a bridge
Wikipedia says Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian state of Tyrol and the fifth-largest city in Austria, lying on the river Inn in a broad valley between high mountains. The name means bridge over the Inn. Wikipedia adds that the city came under Habsburg control in 1363 and later became an important residence of Emperor Maximilian I. That history is why the Old Town holds the landmarks most visitors pair with an evening of Tyrolean music. The first mention of the town, Wikipedia says, is the Latin name Oeni Pons, bridge over the Inn.
The Golden Roof
Wikipedia calls the Golden Roof the most famous symbol of Innsbruck. It says the oriel was completed in 1500, decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles for Emperor Maximilian I to mark his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza, and that the emperor and his wife watched festivals and tournaments from its balcony. The decorations on the current structure are replicas, it adds, with the original reliefs in the Tyrolean State Museum.
Dancers on the Golden Roof
Wikipedia says the flanking reliefs on the second-floor balustrade of the Golden Roof show Moorish dancers engaged in acrobatic and grotesque dancing, a common form of popular entertainment of the time, and that the dancing shown is of Andalusian origin. The building itself was constructed by Archduke Friedrich IV in the early fifteenth century as the residence of the Tyrolean sovereigns. It is a fitting stop before an evening of dance.
The Court Church and the cenotaph
Wikipedia says the Hofkirche, the Court Church, was built in 1553 by Emperor Ferdinand I as a memorial to his grandfather Maximilian I, whose cenotaph holds a remarkable collection of German Renaissance sculpture. The church also contains the tomb of Andreas Hofer, Tyrol's national hero. The church serves as a cenotaph, a monument without the burial itself. Opening hours and tickets are set by the church, so check them close to your visit. Wikipedia adds that the church was designed by Andrea Crivelli of Trento as a hall church with three naves, and that its Renaissance organ dates from 1560.
Folk dance in the street
Tyrolean costume and dance are not confined to the hall. A photograph on Wikimedia Commons from 2019 shows a folk dance group from Absam performing in front of the Golden Roof, with musicians seated behind the dancers. It is a different group from the Gundolf family, and it shows the same tradition on an Old Town street. The Tyrol article on Wikipedia describes the state as one that preserves its folk music, festivals and architecture.
Mountains and Olympics
Wikipedia says Innsbruck sits between the North Chain of the Karwendel Alps to the north and Patscherkofel and Serles to the south, and that it is an internationally renowned winter sports centre that hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. For a visitor with a free daytime, the mountains frame the Old Town on every side. The tourist offices set their own opening times and prices, so check them close to your date.
From the Old Town to the hall
The evening is held at Messe Innsbruck, and Innsbruck's tourist board says tram line 1 reaches it from the city centre in just a few minutes. The family's page describes the hall as in the centre of Innsbruck, a short walk or tram ride away. Plan a daytime in the Old Town, then travel to the hall in good time, using the start time in your booking calendar rather than a guess.
